Last year, Governor Hochul and the state legislature made the largest investment in the New York State Supportive Housing Program (NYSSHP) since its creation over 40 years ago. The funding increase, won in great part thanks to the tireless work of New Destiny’s tenants and domestic violence survivors who advocated for themselves, their families, and their communities, was an enormous first step in meeting their health and safety needs and thousands of New Yorkers’ lives. But that investment was only the first year of a five-year strategy to fully undo the four decades of mostly flat funding that has left many NYSSHP buildings with severe improvement and security needs. As our state faces a federal government committed to rolling back programs that help survivors and other vulnerable New Yorkers stay safely housed, now is the time for New York and its elected leaders to step up and protect the survivors living in supportive housing.

To do this, Governor Hochul and the legislature must build on last year’s sizeable investment and allocate $62.1 million for NYSSHP in this year’s state budget. With increased funding, we can ensure that every NYSSHP development can maintain adequate staffing ratios, pay its workers a living wage, provide 24-hour security, and ultimately make necessary repairs so that supportive housing residents have quality homes. As we approach Governor Hochul’s State of the State address, we and survivors across the state will be watching to see if she will uphold her long-held commitment to people who have experienced domestic violence. This is the Governor’s chance to prove that New York is a national leader in the fight to end homelessness, and we hope she seizes the opportunity.

About New Destiny Housing

New Destiny’s mission is to end the cycle of domestic violence and homelessness for low-income families and individuals by developing and connecting them to safe, permanent, affordable housing and services. Thirty years ago, New Destiny was founded on the understanding that shelter alone cannot put an end to this cycle and have remained steadfast in our focus on permanent housing as the solution for families fleeing abuse with nowhere safe to go. New Destiny builds and manages permanent supportive housing for survivors; helps survivors find safe affordable apartments throughout the city and provides them with the aftercare support they need to remain housed and thrive; and is a leading advocate in the effort to end family homelessness in New York.
