Shelters in New York City are administered by various agencies. New Destiny does not operate shelters.

Domestic Violence Shelters

The New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) oversee domestic violence shelters for survivors in confidential locations around the five boroughs. Placement in a confidential domestic violence shelter is subject to eligibility and capacity within the shelter system. When eligibility or capacity are not met, households may be offered placement within the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) system. Shelter stays within HRA’s confidential domestic violence shelters are time limited.

Survivors of domestic violence seeking shelter in New York City should call the city’s 24-hour domestic violence hotline at 1-800-621-4673.

Survivors with disabilities may contact Barrier Free Living – Freedom House shelter at (212) 400-6470 or their Deaf Services Video Phone at (646) 807-4013.

General Homeless System: Department of Homeless Services (DHS) Shelters

New York City is one of the few places in the country with a right to shelter. Families and individuals in immediate need of shelter should go to one of the following intake centers. These locations are open 24/7, including holidays.

Families with Children Under 21 or Pregnant Women should go to the Prevention Assistance and Temporary Housing (PATH) intake center located at 151 E 151st St, Bronx, NY 10451. Click here for more information.

Single Adults:

  • Intake shelter for single women: Franklin Women’s Shelter, located at 1122 Franklin Avenue, Bronx, NY 10456.
  • Intake shelter for single men: 30th Street Intake Center, located at 400-430 East 30th Street (at First Avenue), New York, NY 10016
  • Transgender individuals: Transgender individuals may go to the intake center that matches their gender identity. Gender identity is the gender you identify with, regardless of your biological gender or legal identity.

Adult Families (households with no children under 21, including siblings, adult child and parent, or domestic partners/legally married couples with no children) should go to the Adult Family Intake Center located inside of the 30th Street Men’s Shelter at 400-430 East 30th Street (corner of First Avenue) New York, NY 10016.

Protections for Victims of Domestic Violence: Families and individuals applying for shelter should disclose they are victims of domestic violence when they arrive at any of the DHS intake centers and ask to speak to someone at the NoVA Unit for a special domestic violence screening. NoVA, which means No Violence Again, may be able to help families and individuals access the confidential domestic violence shelter system or can recommend that shelter applicants be placed in general shelters located in safe areas of the city, away from where the abuse occurred.

Things to know: DHS shelters are not in confidential locations and there may not be any services related to healing from domestic violence at these locations.
